Portovenere sorge all'estremità meridionale della frastagliata linea di costa della riviera Ligure di Levante, facendo da sponda occidentale del Golfo della Spezia, soprannominato anche Golfo dei Poeti. Nel 1997 Porto Venere, insieme con le isole Palmaria, Tino, Tinetto e le Cinque Terre è stato inserito tra i patrimoni dell’umanità dell’UNESCO. A Portovenere, le case-fortezza genovesi, sono costruite in schiera contigua così da formare un sistema difensivo perfettamente integrato; solo poche e strette scalinate, facilmente controllabili, si aprono tra le case per consentire la discesa al mare. Da una storica costruzione strategica ad un simbolo di bellezza ineguagliabile. Da efficiente fortezza a simbolo di unicità, Portovenere un e’ luogo molto piccolo ma con tantissime cose da vedere: La chiesa di San Pietro, simbolo di questo posto meraviglioso, Eretta tra il V secolo e il XIII secolo, arroccata sulla roccia del promontorio delle Bocche di Porto Venere. Dalla chiesa si può ammirare un panorama unico , perdendosi nella vastità del mare o ammirando Le Bocche di Portovenere con l’Isola Palmaria che fa da sponda, la Grotta di Bayron con le sue irregolari linee rocciose vulcaniche, il Castello Doria fortezza situata sull'altura rocciosa che domina il borgo marinaro. Il Castello Doria è considerato una delle più maestose architetture militari edificate dalla Repubblica di Genova nel Levante Ligure. Portovenere, a gem on the Ligurian Riviera di Levante, rises from Liguria’s rugged, southern coastline. It forms part of the western shore of the Gulf of La Spezia, or as it is more affectionately known, the Gulf of Poets. In 1997, Portovenere along with the islands of Palmaria, Tino, Tinetto and Cinque Terre was included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In Portovenere, you will find Genovese fortress style houses, built in continuous rows. They form part of a perfectly integrated defensive system. In fact, the uniqueness of the city is its fortress-like design. There are only a few narrow stairways, between the houses, allowing access to the sea. The design of the houses, and the city itself, reflects both the historic importance of the city while also serving as a symbol of its unparalleled beauty. Portovenere may be small, but it has many things to see. Perhaps the greatest symbol of this wonderful place is the church of San Pietro. Built between the fifth and thirteenth centuries, it is perched on the rocks of the promontory of the Bocche di Portovenere. From the church, you can immerse yourself in the unique panorama. From this vantage point, you can simply admire the vastness of the sea or take in the sight of Le Bocche di Portovenere with the Palmaria Island in view, acting as the shore. You can also see the Bayron Cave with its extraordinary volcanic rocky lines and the Doria Castle fortress located on the rocky hill that overlooks the seaside village. The Doria Castle, built by the Republic of Genoa in the Ligurian Levant, is considered one of the most majestic military buildings. Portovenere itself is full of small, typically Ligurian streets. There is a myriad of shops that offer local handicrafts. Don’t miss “La Bottega di Rena”. A small ceramic and slate workshop that creates works of art that reflect the sea and the colours of Liguria. From a culinary point, don’t miss Portovenere’s famous “Muscoli” (muscle) farms. You can find and taste Muscoli in all the typical restaurants in the city.

There – comes Triton from the waves that lap the threshold of a Christian temple, and every near hour is ancient. Every doubt takes you by hand as if by a young girl friend.
